Several years ago via my work with TheGivingMachine, I met Robert Purcell, the chief executive, from East Herts YMCA (EHYMCA). Although the charity was one of many we were supporting, it was very local and so it was great to meet and get to know some of the local organisations on a personal level. Robert really impressed me with his vision and commitment to make a better world by focusing his efforts on young people in the Bishop’s Stortford area.

At its core, EHYMCA provides a safe place to live for young people, many of whom have a number of issues to deal with that might be related to drugs, family relationships, crime, mental health to name but a few. As I got to know Robert, I was asked whether I’d like to become a trustee and help with their work and so after an induction period, I was approved onto the board at the charity and still serve as a trustee and Vice Chair.

The vision of the EHYMCA includes the phrase to “belong, contribute and thrive” which is part of the overall YMCA movement’s vision too. They are powerful words that could apply to everyone and underpin many drivers and trends we see around us.
